Bears!

By: Elk County Wildlife Conservation Officer Dick Bodenhorn

I had a bear in a trap I had set for research tagging of bears this morning.

When we got there it turned out that besides the bear in the trap there were four cubs in a nearby tree. It would have been nice to capture and tag them too but it just wasn’t possible. We did tag mom though.

I thought you might enjoy some of the cub pictures and even a couple video clips.

You can see mom is still out in the background of this first picture.

The next three pictures were taken after the cubs had crawled over mom while she was out but they retreated to the tree when walked over to check on mom’s status and try to get her on her feet.

If it works the way I hope you will get to watch some video of the cubs when they come down to the pond to get a drink while they wait for mom to get on her feet and start acting more like she always has in the past.

The final is a short video clip of mom and the cubs once mom is coming out of the drug. Unfortunately my memory card filled up just before mom and cubs turned around and ambled into the woods.

I hope you enjoyed this brief visit into the day of a big woods WCO.
